Anconcito, a historic fishing port in the province of Santa Elena, renowned for its rich tradition of artisanal fishing, has long been a cornerstone of commerce and cultural life in the region. Its strategic location has cemented its role as a key hub for various maritime routes.
The decision to land the CSN1 submarine cable in Anconcito followed extensive studies that focused on two essential criteria: diversity in relation to the existing PCCS submarine cable and security measures to prevent cable cuts.
In this context, diversity refers to more than just using a different landing station than the PCCS. The submarine cable segments connected to the new landing station must be geographically distant to mitigate risks related to climatic events or maritime navigation incidents. Additionally, the terrestrial networks linking the landing stations to major cities must also ensure diversity.
The security of the landing site is safeguarded throughout both the Pre-Installation and Preliminary Survey phases.
During the Pre-Installation phase, land-based inspections were conducted, and the characteristics of the coastal seabed were thoroughly examined, with a particular focus on the navigation activity of large vessels that could pose a risk to the cable.
Later, during the Preliminary Survey, a ship equipped with sonar technology performed a detailed analysis of the seabed, identifying the optimal location for laying the cable and determining the necessary burial depth for each segment based on the seabed’s characteristics. This process also involved soil sampling along all sections where the cable would be buried.
The installation of the CSN1 landing in Anconcito will not only enhance Ecuador's international connectivity but also stimulate local development, bringing benefits such as improved communication infrastructure in the area.
